Decorating Around the TV
The television -- it's become the centerpiece of any living room. While tv's have become smaller and sleeker over the years (no more dedicated massive entertainment centers, yay!), I personally believe they are still an eyesore.
So, in our first home, I set out - using pinterest for inspiration - to figure out what to do with my massive wall so that when the tv wasn't lit up, there was still something interesting to look at.
We added two small Sebastian Wood Shelves from World Market and I replaced some of the artwork with larger pieces. On the right is a watercolor of coffee beans and above the tv are 3 gallery frames that I found on sale at Restoration Hardware combined with some fine paper that I had picked up at the Paper Source a year prior just because I thought it was beautiful. We also painted the walls in the living room to get away from the apartment paint look - as I remarked to my sister in law... "I want to paint the room an interesting color... like grey". Looking back, I do still love the paint color that we chose from Sherwin Williams (Knitting Needles) which was a calming but neutral backdrop for my splashes of green and blue.

On the shelves I gathered a collection of my favorite things - a watercolor painting of our house that my grandma had given us for Christmas, some repurposed house-boat wood crafted into a simple sculpture of a home that we had picked up on our trip to Amsterdam, a wooden cat that had been given as a gift to me 20 years ago, a collection of books, and an aloe plant - which survives remarkably well will very little care.
For those of you who are just now setting out to make sense of the tv wall space:
- Maintain a sense of balance and draw the eye upward to visually create more space
- Don't be afraid to create your own artwork - especially with the popularity of abstract pieces coming back into style it is very simple and easy (and inexpensive) to run to the nearest Hobby Lobby and pick up a canvas and some paint
- Choose display pieces that you love - try not to feel like you have to have a finished product right away - style and spaces evolve over time and if you stick to pieces that you truly love, they will never go out of style
